A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
