India's capital Wakes Up to Hazardous Haze After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Various sections of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to 10x the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than acceptable limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

For the past four years, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that covers the capital as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the current city administration petitioned the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a middle ground between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the designated hours across the city, with minimal regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Many recording stations throughout the city showed contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst measurements seen during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Issue

Alarmingly severe levels of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the worst records ever recorded in China's capital, which was once viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Contamination Contributors

The problem in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous smog that becomes contained over the city as cooler air descends.

Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is significant, according to various studies.

This pollution leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k premature deaths per year in the capital.
